This week, we learned about cell cycle and totipotency, together with pollination.
For totipotency, I learned that it is the ability of an individual plant cell/tissue/organ to regenerate into a whole plant under right conditions. This is the basis for tissue culture in plants. It means that if we take a part of a plant like its shoot or its root, we can do tissue culture and a new plant with the same characteristics will be formed. There is callus which are basically undifferentiated cells. They are free to form anything because they don't have identity yet and some of them are able to form embryo.
I also found out that this does not work for animal cells. I guess this means that we can only do this to increase crop production which can benefit us and not to produce human or animal clones.
We also learned about pollination. Plants have both male and female structure, in which some have them on the same flower and others have them on different flowers. In easy words, pollen grains are transferred from the male part of the flower to the stigma (female part) of the plant. We watched a couple videos about pollination in the class and had a quiz.
